In the rematch of Byrd vs Halladay (only the teams have changed), it is Halladay winning this time as it was his turn to go the distance. Byrd, now w/BOS after the trade from CLE, pitched ok but this time he couldn’t go the distance. Halladay was very sharp working on 6 days rest due to the Jays wanting to push him back a day in order to face BOS instead of DET and then the rain out last night. Other than the HR in the 9th the only time the Red Sox had a RISP was w/2 out in the 1st when they had 1st and 2nd. Halladay threw 21 first pitch strikes to the 32 hitters he faced. Of those 21, only 3 batters got hits and 2 of those were on the 1st pitch. Compare that to 4 hits from the 11 hitters who saw 1st pitch balls.
Halladay was helped out by 3 DP’s, 2 on the ground and one off a line drive. The Jays could have turned 4 if not for Inglett failing to complete the DP in the 5th.
Alex Rios had the big stick for the Jays w/a 2-run HR in the 1st, and then he tripled and scored in the 8th. Inglett and Scutaro each chipped in a pair of 1B’s. For Inglett he is now 5 for 8 against Byrd this season.
I’m not sure why Stairs wasn’t playing other than he is 0 for his last 8 and Wilkerson went 1 for 3 compared to Stairs’ 0 for 3 against Byrd when they faced him in TOR.
The 2 teams combined for just 2 AB’s w/RISP. The Sox went 0 for 1, while the Jays were 1 for 1.
Here are the stats:
WG: Scutaro (8), Ellsbury
DE: Inglett (3)
