Burnett looked great for 5 innings giving up just 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 and the Jays looked to be cruising thanks to a 7-run third. However, things quickly fell apart in the 6th as the Orioles went 1B, 1B, popout, BB, 1B, 1B, 3-run HR to close within 1 (8-7). That ended Burnett’s night and Carlson had to finish off the inning.
Yes that was actually a lefty on the mound for the Orioles that the Jays hit around. Olson was charged w/all 7 runs in the 4th inning getting pulled w/2 outs after facing 11 hitters.
The Jays scored what proved to be a huge insurance run in the 6th on back-to-back 2-out 1B’s by Barajas and Rolen scoring Wells. I would have actually PH Overbay for Barajas in that inning. If you were planning on using Overbay at some point anyways (which Cito should have been) and not giving him an entire day off why not use him there. The LH starter is already gone from the game and you’re already in the lead so why not get Overbay in there vs the RH and then get the defensive upgrade he represents over Barajas the rest of the way.
Since Cito did not use Overbay to PH for bring him in for Zaun and move Barajas to catcher. I’m sorry but other than arm strength, Zaun is the better defensive catcher and should be the one staying in the game. It’s not like Overbay hits like McDonald or a pitcher and should be put in the last spot due up in the order.
Wouldn’t you know as soon as the Jays move Rios over to CF in the 7th he gets tested by Huff trying to score from 2nd on a 1B. Funny how things workout. With 2 outs it was the right move sending Huff but Rios easily threw him out.
I think there was some hometown scoring in effect on the McDonald infield 1B in the 4th, must have been feeling sorry for him, they know he needs all the hits he can get.
Onto the stats: Interesting enough both teams started their big innings off w/1st and 2nd none out then followed w/a non-advance.
NAdv: Millar, Barajas (5)
P-NAdv: Olson, Burnett (10)
