Well, it was pretty cool to see an unassisted triple play. It was only the 14th such in baseball history. It also underscored just how much bad luck the Jays are running into w/RISP. They cannot buy a hit, everything hit hard is right at someone, and they can’t even get a bloop or a broken bat hit. I don’t blame Gibbons for starting the runners, trying to get anything going for this offence. Its hard to believe but it got worse for the Jays as they got robbed not once, but twice in the 9th inning when either one would have pushed across the go ahead run. All told the Jays scoreless streak was up to 31. Then came the 10th and they finally managed to push across a run on a SF before Hill added a couple of insurance runs w/a 2-run single.
Cliff Lee has certainly gotten off to an amazing start this year. For a guy who got demoted last year to the minors he isn’t pitching like it now. Of course he did win 18 games 3 years ago, but his numbers are ridiculous right now. So it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise given the way the Jays offence has been going, especially against LH’s that he shut them down for 9 innings. Even if Lee has made the necessary adjustments after hitters adjusted to him last year he is due for a couple rough starts soon.
Another great start from Marcum as he goes 8 and only gives up 2 hits and a hits batsmen. And all he gets to show for it is a no decision. He continues to be the best pitcher on this staff so far this year. His groundball to flyball ratio was down this game as he had more flyball outs but he was keeping them in the yard.
At least its not just the Jays struggling w/RISP as the Indians go 0 for 7 in the game. The Jays actually managed a 2 for 7.
I like the tag by Wilkerson in the 10th moving to 2nd on the SF. I think its something you don’t see enough of, runners tagging from 1st. Granted the throw to 2nd is a lot shorter but I think sometimes runners just don’t think about the possibility of tagging from 1st and just do the go halfway until its caught.
