Game 37 – Hesitation

Once again it is 1 bad inning that hurts Halladay, although this time it chased him from the game. I think the 4-pitch walk to Cabrera should have been a sign to Gibbons that Halladay was done and needed to be removed but it is hard to blame him for sticking w/Doc. If it was any other pitcher they would have been pulled, in fact they probably don’t even pitch to Cabrera. Ace or not, no matter how much of a workhorse a pitcher is it is up to Gibbons to get the starter out once he has tired and when a fresh arm from the bullpen would be more effective. The problem for Halladay today was his stuff might have been too good, as the Indians couldn’t make much contact going down on strikes 9 times but in so doing drove up the pitch count.

Great catch from Wells, and he had a good read off the bat. Now the Jays are more than likely going to be w/o his services for awhile. It was nice to hear the CLE fans give a good round of applause for Wells as he walked off the field.

A very late stop sign went up from Pevey w/Scutaro rounding 3rd on the Hill 2B in the 5th. Although there were 2 outs it was the right move holding him up, but that decision has to come sooner. Pevey looked kind of lost on the play as he was initially waving him once the ball was hit then he stopped doing anything as he looked out and you could tell he was trying to decide and he finally threw up a stop sign. Pevey needs to make sure he keeps waving him until he throws that stop sign up, he can’t do nothing it will force the baserunner to look at the play for himself. We’ve seen a few bad sends/holds from Pevey already this year and maybe now he is getting tentative.

Sabathia looked to be back to his 2007 form, although w/the Jays offence these days you never can tell. They tacked up another 1 for 9 w/RISP.

The reliable bullpen let the Jays down as Accardo struggled following Carlson and Halladay in the 7th and he let the Indians put the game out reach. Once CLE pinch hit w/Francisco it was the right move to get Accardo it just didn’t work out.

For the game stats:
Adv+: Blake
P-Adv+: Halladay (4)
NAdv: Mench (1), Garko, Sizemore
P-NAdv: Halladay (3), Carlson (2), Sabathia
WG: Wells (2)
