It took awhile, but TOR’s offence woke up once they got to the bullpen and went an amazing 3 for 9 w/RISP to lead them to the win. The Jays explosion in the 8th created near identical lines for 2 rays relievers. Dohmann went K, BB, H, and Miller went K, BB, H w/all each giving up 2 runs. The only difference being Dohmann gave up a HR, Miller a 2B.
All the offence gave Marcum a chance to go for his 1st career CG instead of him getting pulled had it stayed 1-0. Unfortunately for him, after 2 out were out Iwamura’s ground ball found a hole and w/Crawford’s speed there was no play on the high chopper and then once Upton drilled him for a double, Gibbons had to go get him. And it was the right move. The fact was Gibbons was already letting him go longer than he wanted in order to try and get the CG shutout and you can’t let something like that get in the way of winning the game. Plus lets not forget this is Marcum’s 1st full year starting and there is no need to tax him this early in the season. The way he is pitching there will be plenty more opportunities to go the distance, especially once the Jays have a few more off days and their starters will be working on 5 days rest a little more often.
I don’t agree w/Hill bunting in the 7th. Aside from the fact it didn’t work, at least it didn’t advance Overbay, I guess in the long run it worked since Barajas and Scutaro got hits but that is hindsight. I realize Hill has been struggling but why bunt when you have your 8 and 9 hitters coming up. They are not that likely to get a hit and even if they do, not every hit would score Overbay from 2nd. I would have much rather seen a hit and run in that situation. Maybe Hill finds a hole to setup 1st and 3rd or if he at least gets it on the ground it works the same as a bunt advancing Overbay to 2nd.
Now after I’ve just dissed the 8 and 9 hitters, it is nice when they combine to go 5 for 8 w/3 RBI’s.
